After some 29 years on Madison Avenue, I’m finally re-discovering my first love – painting.
I was a fine arts major at the Rochester Institute of Technology, receiving my BFA in Painting in 1975.
By 1977, I was still living in Cleveland, Ohio and hoping to move to NYC. That summer, one painting and one drawing of mine were selected in a juried show at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The “Fat Man” and the “Buses” hung in the museum there most of the summer.
In 1978, on the heels of my success in Cleveland, I moved to Greenwich Village in New York City. I soon married, raised a family and began looking for work as an illustrator. I got work drawing storyboards for TV commercials, and was eventually promoted to Art Director, then later Creative Director at a large New York City ad agency. I moved to California in 2006, and finally ended my advertising career in 2011.
Fast forward to 2024 and I’m now living in Jacksonville, Oregon with my wife Cheryl. I paint solely in oils, and greatly appreciate the work of masters Edward Hopper, Eduard Manet and John Singer Sargent.
I try to create the appearance of a light source on the canvas, whether it’s from sunlight, a neon sign, candlelight, or a flash. The idea that paint can represent light when the color, tint, and value all work together is somewhat magical to me. I strive to create the “feeling” of light, despite the reality of working with sometimes gooey paint on the canvas.
Thanks so much for visiting!
You are the man. If you ad many more talents, I’m just not sure we can still be friends.
